OVER 170K FELL OUT THE BACK OF A ARMORED TRUCK ALONG 285! (READ MORE) Authorities are asking people who collected cash that fell out of an armored truck to return the money. Dozens of drivers pulled over on the shoulder and jumped out of their vehicles on I-285 in Dunwoody, Georgia after the side door of the armored truck burst open, sending money flying across the busy highway.
By the time the police arrived, all of the motorists had left the scene and there was barely any money left behind. Authorities say that about $175,000 fell out of the truck, and they were only able to recover about $200 at the scene.
While the motorists may feel like they just hit the lottery, the police say they must turn over any money they happened to collect.
“Certainly, this is a crime, and it was obvious the money had fallen out of the truck,” Dunwoody Police spokesperson Sgt. Robert Parsons said. “The money needs to be returned to the owner.”
Only two people have turned in money so far. One person handed in $2,000 to the police, while another person turned over $600 that they collected.
“That leaves a lot left out there,” Parsons said.
Officials are investigating and are reviewing videos shared on social media to track down the people who made off with the cash.
“We understand anyone in that position would be tempted, but we want people to do the right thing and bring the money back, so they don’t have to worry about police knocking on their door,” said Parsons.
