When the criminal trial began yesterday, diplomat Robert C. O’Brien was among those in court to observe as Mayers and two co-defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mr O’Brien, the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, said yesterday: “The President asked me to come here and support these American citizens. I’ll be here until they come home.”

The experienced diplomat, who also served under President George W Bush and as a legal officer to the UN Security Council, has assisted astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the past and represented the US at the Comprehensive Convention of International Terrorism.

Joining celebrities voicing their support for Mayers, President Trump had offered to guarantee the rapper’s bail ahead of the trial and tweeted: “Treat Americans fairly!”. He also criticised Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven for not intervening.

“We do so much for Sweden but it doesn’t seem to work the other way around. Sweden should focus on its real crime problem! #FreeRocky”, he said.
