Cardi B had a very public breakup with husband Offset, which included a potentially inappropriate grand gesture in which Offest tried to win her back. But dramatic gestures aside, Cardi addressed the real reasons she eventually decided to reconcile with the rapper in a new interview with Vogue. In the interview, Cardi opened up about her relationship, saying that cheating is the ultimate betrayal to her. Still, Cardi recognized that no relationship is perfect, and after intense reflection, she decided to forgive Offset and try again.
“My thing is, everybody on social media acts like relationships is perfect. And that’s crazy to me. I’m around so many women, and there’s always a woman talking about how she loves her man, but her man is not financially stable, or she has a problem with his mom, or the sex is not as good anymore,” Cardi said. “Everybody has issues. I believe in forgiveness. I prayed on it. Me and my husband, we prayed on it. We had priests come to us. And we just came to an understanding like, bro, it’s really us against the world. He has my back for everything, I have his back for everything, so when you cheat, you’re betraying the person that has your back the most. Why would you do that? We have come to a clear understanding. For me, monogamy is the only way. I’ll beat your ass if you cheat on me.”
While her decision to return to her relationship with Offset took much consideration, Cardi said many were mad at her for going back to someone who cheated on her.
“When me and my husband got into our issues—you know, he cheated and everything—and I decided to stay with him and work together with him, a lot of people were so mad at me; a lot of women felt disappointed in me,” she said. “But it’s real-life sh*t. If you love somebody and you stop being with them, and you’re depressed and social media is telling you not to talk to that person because he cheated, you’re not really happy on the inside until you have the conversation. Then, if you get back with them, it’s like, how could you? You let all of us down. People that be in marriages for years, when they say till death do us part, they not talking about little arguments like if you leave the fridge open. That’s including everything.”
Cheating is certainly a betrayal of trust in a relationship, and it’s one that many people can not accept. In relationships, there should be an expectation of respect and safety that cheating can seriously overturn. But Cardi’s decision to get back together with Offset is her own to make. She doesn’t deserve to be judged or chastised for making the decision that’s best for her and her relationship. She noted that many were disappointed in her, but the truth is that it’s important that she made her own decision — independent of what fans or people on social media think — on what will make her most happy in the future. Cardi also said that her and Offset now have a “clear understanding” about the importance of monogamy in their relationship, underscoring just how crucial it is for people in relationships to have open and honest communication.
