A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain broke out across the area earlier Sunday evening. We expect it to continue through much of the overnight leading to icy, snow-covered roads in certain areas, especially to the north.
The Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula, part of the Peninsula, and the northern half of the Eastern Shore are underneath a Winter Storm Warning starting Sunday afternoon. Expect snowfall totals in these areas anywhere from 2-6″.
We do have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the majority of the Southside, excluding Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, for snowfall totals up to 2″.
Temperatures will hover at or below freezing in many interior locations through most of the overnight so icy spots are expected. By sunrise Monday winds will shift to acquire a southerly component meaning temperatures will begin warming. We transition to rain in southern zones and that freezing line will continue lifting north by mid-morning.
For most of Hampton Roads and northeast North Carolina, we can expect periods of rain, particularly during the late morning and afternoon. However, the Peninsulas and Eastern Shore may see a much more impactful winter event as the cold air leads to an increased chance of greater accumulations of snow/sleet.
As the storm deepens offshore and pulls away the wraparound flow will once again deliver a push of colder temperatures. This could mean we see a transition back to a period of wintry mix around sunset Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Minimal accumulations are expected but once again with wet roads and falling temperatures, the concern would be for slick spots to redevelop.
