Excitement filled the air as students returned to class in Portsmouth and Norfolk, greeted with cheers, music, and a clear focus on the future.
At Manor High School, Portsmouth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy III welcomed the new year with optimism. “There’s nothing like the first day of school,” he said, highlighting the launch of the district’s new five-year strategic plan, Igniting Futures. The plan focuses on student achievement, innovative learning, staff support, and a safe, connected school environment.
Energy was high, thanks to a pep rally last week and a lively welcome from cheerleaders and a drumline. Sophomore Meagan Powell summed it up: “I’m ready for football, basketball — just a fun year and good vibes.”
In Norfolk, P.B. Young Sr. Elementary started strong with help from Community First, whose mentors welcomed students with snacks, music, and encouragement. “I want kids to enjoy life and not repeat the hardships I went through,” said volunteer Jawanza Johnson.
Principal Candiase Driver urged parents to stay involved: “Show up. Get to know your child’s teacher. Support matters.”
Norfolk Public Schools also announced continued access to free breakfast and lunch for all students — with snacks and dinner provided at schools offering after-school programs.
The school year has begun with a unified message: connection, care, and a commitment to student success.
