Federal, state, and local authorities are searching for a gunman who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was struck by a single round while speaking under a campus tent, according to officials. Witnesses said the shooter, dressed in dark clothing and a mask, fired from a rooftop before fleeing into nearby woods. A high-powered rifle believed to be the weapon was later recovered.
The suspect is described as appearing college-aged and able to blend in with students. Officials urged the public to share any photos or videos that may aid the investigation. Two people detained shortly after the shooting were released without charges.
Political leaders across the spectrum responded Thursday. Former President Donald Trump announced Kirk would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, calling him a “great guy from top to bottom.” Congressional Democrats urged unity, while tributes from allies described Kirk as a patriot who inspired young conservatives.
Authorities have not identified a motive, and the shooter remains at large.
