The City of Norfolk has officially designated July 14th as Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker Day, transforming the anniversary of his passing into a day of celebration and remembrance.

Whitaker, who died in 2019, is remembered as one of the greatest defensive boxers in the history of the sport. His accomplishments include four world titles across multiple weight classes, an Olympic gold medal, and induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Beyond his decorated career, Whitaker’s influence continued in his hometown, where he mentored and trained the next generation of fighters. His commitment to uplifting local youth through boxing left a lasting impact on the Norfolk community.

The newly declared holiday will serve as an annual opportunity to honor Whitaker’s legacy—both as a global boxing legend and a local figure who gave back to the city that shaped him.

Virginia Beach Moves Forward With Major Data Center Expansion to Boost Technology Industry

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Virginia Beach is taking another step toward expanding its technology industry after city officials approved a design review for a proposed data center development at Corporate Landing Business Park. The project, proposed by Globalinx, would expand the company’s data infrastructure presence in the city and contribute to the growing demand for facilities capable of supporting digital communications and cloud-based services. Data centers play an important role in the modern economy by housing computer systems, networking equipment and technology infrastructure used by businesses and digital platforms. The proposed expansion reflects Virginia Beach’s ongoing efforts to attract technology-related investment and diversify its economy beyond tourism, hospitality and military-related industries. Corporate Landing Business Park has become an important location for businesses involved in technology, telecommunications and international connectivity. Virginia Beach’s proximity to undersea fiber-optic cable infrastructure has also helped strengthen its position as a potential destination for data-driven companies. Supporters of technology development point to opportunities for construction employment, infrastructure investment and long-term business growth. However, large data center projects can also raise questions about electricity demand, water use, land development and their impact on surrounding communities. The approved design review represents progress in the planning process, although additional development requirements may still need to be satisfied before construction proceeds. As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital connectivity continues growing, Virginia Beach is positioning itself to compete for additional investment in the technology sector. For Hampton Roads, the proposed expansion represents another example of how the regional economy is evolving to support emerging industries.
