Outside the Portsmouth Main Library, the feel-like temperature hovered around 110 degrees, and with the National Weather Service having issued a extreme heat warning, the city of Portsmouth responded.

“We are operating cooling centers in the city of Portsmouth, all of our libraries or sites,” said Todd Elliott, director of libraries for Portsmouth. “Today is a very hot day. And so we have ice cold water available at all of our locations. In addition to that, we’re just a welcoming space. People should just be here anyway. Bring your family; spend some time.”
