In a groundbreaking move to bring workforce training directly into the community, Tidewater Community College (TCC) and the City of Norfolk have unveiled a brand-new “Mobile Healthcare Lab” designed to eliminate barriers for students and meet the rising demand for skilled healthcare professionals.
The initiative, launched through TCC’s Workforce Solutions and the city’s career-and-economic team, features a fully fitted mobile unit capable of simulating a clinical setting—complete with an exam room for phlebotomy and patient care training. Training cohorts are already underway: one nine-week phlebotomy cohort and a 15-week Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) program set to launch in spring. The training is paired with workplace readiness workshops, “boot-camp” style sessions on soft skills and career coaching. TCC.edu+1
City leaders praised the collaboration, noting that embedding training easily into local communities accelerates access to careers in high-demand fields. For students, the payoff is direct: credentials that open doors into healthcare roles without requiring a traditional multi-year college timeline.
