• Don Toliver Could Win Best New Artist Grammy Despite Already Having Five Top 10 Albums

Houston rapper and singer Don Toliver is making headlines after being included among the artists eligible for Best New Artist consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, despite already establishing himself as a successful recording artist. Toliver, known for his melodic sound and collaborations with some of hip-hop’s biggest names, is among 331 artists on the entry list for the prestigious award. What makes his inclusion particularly interesting is his impressive track record. Since 2020, Toliver has earned five consecutive top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, including his 2026 project OCTANE, which became his first No. 1 album. The development has sparked discussion about what qualifies someone as a new artist in today’s music industry. Under the Recording Academy’s guidelines, Best New Artist eligibility is not determined solely by how long an artist has been releasing music or how many albums they have recorded. Instead, the Academy considers when an artist achieved a significant breakthrough and whether their work made a major impact during the eligibility period. For the 2027 awards, the Recording Academy also increased the number of times an artist may be submitted for Best New Artist consideration from three to four. Toliver first gained widespread attention through his appearance on Travis Scott’s 2018 song “CAN’T SAY.” Since then, he has developed a successful solo career and built a dedicated audience through projects that combine hip-hop, R&B, and atmospheric production. His inclusion on the Grammy entry list reflects the changing definition of an emerging artist and the increasingly varied paths musicians take toward mainstream recognition. However, being eligible does not guarantee a nomination. Recording Academy members must still vote to determine which artists advance to the final nominee list. Nominations for the 2027 Grammy Awards are scheduled to be announced November 16, with the ceremony taking place February 7, 2027. For Don Toliver, a potential Best New Artist nomination would represent another significant achievement in a career that has already produced multiple chart successes. • Norfolk Residents Demand Removal of Police Surveillance Cameras Amid Privacy Concerns

NORFOLK, VA — A growing debate over public safety and personal privacy is unfolding in Norfolk as residents call on city officials to reconsider the use of automated license plate-reading cameras. On October 13, approximately 50 demonstrators gathered outside Norfolk City Hall to urge city leaders to end their agreement with Flock Safety, a company that provides surveillance technology used by law enforcement agencies. The demonstration was organized around concerns that the cameras collect information about vehicles and their movements, potentially allowing authorities to track residents’ travel patterns. Supporters of the technology argue that the cameras provide investigators with valuable information that can help identify vehicles connected to violent crimes and other criminal investigations. However, privacy advocates question whether the benefits outweigh the risks of collecting and storing information about everyday drivers who are not suspected of wrongdoing. The debate comes as other Virginia communities reconsider their relationships with Flock Safety. Henrico County recently announced plans to terminate its agreement, citing concerns about the potential misuse of collected information. Norfolk’s controversy also follows a federal court ruling earlier this year that found the city’s existing camera system did not violate constitutional protections under the circumstances reviewed, while acknowledging that future uses could raise legal concerns. As the discussion continues, city leaders face pressure to balance effective policing with residents’ expectations of privacy and accountability. The outcome could help shape how surveillance technology is used throughout Hampton Roads.
