Newport News Public Schools Celebrates Record-Breaking 98% Graduation Rate
NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Newport News Public Schools is celebrating a major academic achievement after reporting a record-high on-time graduation rate of 98.06% for the Class of 2026. The milestone represents significant progress for the school division and highlights ongoing efforts to improve student achievement, academic support and graduation outcomes. According to district officials, the latest results mark one of the strongest performances in the division’s history. The graduation rate reflects the percentage of students who completed high school within the state’s standard four-year graduation timeline. School leaders have emphasized the importance of maintaining strong academic expectations while providing students with the resources needed to remain on track toward graduation. Programs focused on academic intervention, student engagement, career preparation and individualized learning support are among the strategies school systems use to improve graduation outcomes. In addition to the graduation milestone, Newport News Public Schools reported that all schools maintained full accreditation for the second consecutive year. Accreditation reflects several measures of school performance and accountability established by the Virginia Department of Education. The achievements are particularly meaningful for families across Newport News, where public education plays an important role in preparing young people for college, employment and other opportunities. A higher graduation rate can also benefit the surrounding community by helping more students qualify for higher education, workforce training and career advancement. While graduation statistics represent an important measure of progress, education leaders continue to focus on ensuring that students leave school prepared for success beyond the classroom. Virginia Beach Moves Forward With Major Data Center Expansion to Boost Technology Industry
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Virginia Beach is taking another step toward expanding its technology industry after city officials approved a design review for a proposed data center development at Corporate Landing Business Park. The project, proposed by Globalinx, would expand the company’s data infrastructure presence in the city and contribute to the growing demand for facilities capable of supporting digital communications and cloud-based services. Data centers play an important role in the modern economy by housing computer systems, networking equipment and technology infrastructure used by businesses and digital platforms. The proposed expansion reflects Virginia Beach’s ongoing efforts to attract technology-related investment and diversify its economy beyond tourism, hospitality and military-related industries. Corporate Landing Business Park has become an important location for businesses involved in technology, telecommunications and international connectivity. Virginia Beach’s proximity to undersea fiber-optic cable infrastructure has also helped strengthen its position as a potential destination for data-driven companies. Supporters of technology development point to opportunities for construction employment, infrastructure investment and long-term business growth. However, large data center projects can also raise questions about electricity demand, water use, land development and their impact on surrounding communities. The approved design review represents progress in the planning process, although additional development requirements may still need to be satisfied before construction proceeds. As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital connectivity continues growing, Virginia Beach is positioning itself to compete for additional investment in the technology sector. For Hampton Roads, the proposed expansion represents another example of how the regional economy is evolving to support emerging industries. -
Virginia Beach Schools Limit Chromebook Use to Bring Hands-On Learning Back to Classrooms
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Virginia Beach City Public Schools is making changes to how technology is used in elementary classrooms, placing greater emphasis on traditional teaching methods and hands-on learning experiences. The district has introduced restrictions on Chromebook use among its youngest students as educators work to establish a healthier balance between digital instruction and face-to-face learning. Under the updated approach, teachers are incorporating more classroom activities that encourage students to interact directly with educational materials rather than relying heavily on computer screens. These activities include reading physical books, completing written assignments, participating in group discussions and using hands-on educational tools. Some classrooms are also bringing back listening centers and other instructional methods designed to strengthen communication, comprehension and social development. The changes reflect growing discussions nationwide about the role of technology in early childhood education. While digital devices can provide valuable educational resources, some educators and researchers have raised concerns about excessive screen exposure and its potential effects on attention, engagement and classroom interaction. Virginia Beach educators are working to find an approach that allows students to develop essential technology skills without making digital devices the primary method of instruction. The adjustments may also provide teachers with more flexibility to tailor lessons to different learning styles. As schools continue evaluating the changes, the district’s approach could offer insight into how technology and traditional classroom instruction can work together. For families across Virginia Beach, the shift represents an effort to create a more balanced educational environment for young learners.
