As students across Hampton Roads—including Virginia Beach, Newport News, Suffolk, and Hampton—head back to school, Hampton City Schools is prioritizing safety. On Monday, 10 On Your Side’s Michael Rinker visited Hampton to highlight new measures, including red-light cameras near schools to catch speeding or reckless drivers. These cameras, operated with Verra Mobility, issue civil penalties but do not count as traffic violations, helping keep students safe during their daily commute.

The City of Hampton has noticed many drivers cutting through downtown to avoid bridge and tunnel traffic, creating potential dangers for students. When a vehicle is flagged for unsafe driving, the police review the report to confirm any violations. Meanwhile, Hampton City Schools will have security and resource officers on campus to ensure a safe environment for students.
