HAMPTON, VA — Hampton residents and visitors gathered over the weekend to remember a pivotal moment in American history during the annual African Landing Day commemoration, honoring the arrival of the first recorded Africans in English North America more than four centuries ago.
The ceremony commemorates the events of 1619, when a group of Africans arrived at Point Comfort, the location now known as Fort Monroe in Hampton. Their arrival marked a defining chapter in the development of the colonies and the history of African Americans in what would eventually become the United States.
Despite inclement weather forcing Saturday’s ceremony indoors, community members still came together to recognize the lives, experiences and lasting legacy of those who arrived in Virginia more than 400 years ago.
The commemoration is designed not only to remember the hardships faced by the first Africans and generations that followed, but also to recognize the resilience, culture and contributions of African Americans throughout the nation’s history.
This year’s African Landing Day is part of a larger African Landing Commemoration Week running August 22 through August 29. Hampton has scheduled educational programs, cultural experiences, community discussions, wellness activities and other special events throughout the city.
Activities during the week include a Sunrise Healing Day Ceremony, youth African dance and drum classes, spoken-word and poetry events, historical discussions and additional programs highlighting African and African American history and culture.
Fort Monroe continues to hold a special place in that history. The site recently added an African Landing Memorial Plaza, further recognizing the Africans who arrived at Point Comfort in 1619 and providing a permanent space for visitors to learn about and reflect on their story.
For Hampton, the annual observance remains an opportunity to confront a difficult chapter of American history while celebrating the strength of the generations who came afterward. The continued commemoration also helps ensure that the story of the 1619 landing and its impact on the nation is preserved for future generations.
