Rapper Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial is underway, with prosecutors presenting new details surrounding allegations that the Chicago artist financed an attempted hit against fellow rapper Quando Rondo and later attempted to leave the United States.
Durk, whose legal name is Durk Devontay Banks, is accused of orchestrating a 2022 attack targeting Quando Rondo in Los Angeles. Rondo survived the shooting, but his cousin Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson was killed. Durk has pleaded not guilty and faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
During the opening stages of the trial, prosecutors reportedly argued that Durk attempted to leave the country around the time federal authorities were closing in on him in October 2024. Previous court records showed that Durk booked flights connected to Switzerland and Dubai, along with a private flight to Italy, before authorities arrested him in South Florida.
Durk’s defense disputes the prosecution’s interpretation of his travel plans. According to courtroom reporting cited by HotNewHipHop, his attorneys maintain that he was in Miami to work with producer and music executive DJ Khaled, rather than attempting to escape law enforcement.
Financial records are also becoming an important part of the government’s case. Reports from the trial allege that airline tickets for men accused of participating in the shooting appeared on Durk’s American Express credit card statement. Prosecutors have previously alleged that travel and rental-car expenses connected to the alleged operation were funded through resources tied to Durk and his Only the Family organization.
Several individuals connected to OTF are also expected to cooperate with prosecutors. HotNewHipHop reports that OTF Jam, OTF Vonni and Flacka were identified as cooperating witnesses during the first day of proceedings. Durk’s defense is expected to challenge the government’s version of events and the credibility of testimony presented against him.
The case stems from prosecutors’ allegation that the 2022 shooting was retaliation following the 2020 death of Durk’s friend and fellow rapper King Von, who was killed during a confrontation involving associates of Quando Rondo in Atlanta. Durk has denied responsibility for the alleged murder-for-hire plot.
The trial is expected to continue for approximately two to four weeks, depending on witness testimony and other proceedings. With both sides presenting sharply different explanations of the evidence, the jury will ultimately decide whether prosecutors have proven the allegations against Durk beyond a reasonable doubt.
