HAMPTON ROADS, VA — Early risers across Hampton Roads were treated to an unusual sight in the sky as a SpaceX rocket launch created a bright, glowing display visible across parts of southeastern Virginia.
The spectacle appeared in the early morning hours as a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket traveled along the East Coast. As the rocket climbed into the upper atmosphere, sunlight illuminated its exhaust plume against the darker sky below, creating a dramatic cloud-like trail that could be seen from miles away.
Residents throughout the Hampton Roads region quickly grabbed their phones and cameras to capture the moment. Photos and videos shared with WAVY showed the glowing plume stretching across the sky, with some viewers initially wondering what they were seeing.
These displays can occur when a rocket launches shortly before sunrise or after sunset. At high altitudes, the rocket and its exhaust can still be illuminated by the sun even though observers on the ground are surrounded by darkness. The combination can produce bright, colorful shapes that sometimes resemble a glowing cloud or streak across the sky.
The sight generated plenty of attention across the region, with Hampton Roads residents sharing their different views of the launch from communities throughout southeastern Virginia. WAVY also published a collection of viewer-submitted images highlighting how the rocket appeared from different locations.
SpaceX Falcon 9 launches have become increasingly visible along portions of the East Coast as the company continues carrying satellites and other payloads into orbit. Depending on weather, the rocket’s flight path and lighting conditions, launches can sometimes be spotted hundreds of miles away.
For those who happened to be outside at just the right time, the launch provided a memorable start to the day — and another reminder that some of the most impressive views of a space mission can happen far beyond the launch pad.
