RICHMOND, VA — Virginians now have a new way to carry their identification. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has launched support for driver’s licenses and state-issued ID cards in Apple Wallet, allowing eligible residents to add a digital version of their credential to an iPhone or Apple Watch. The new feature gives residents another option for proving their identity at participating businesses, organizations, apps and certain airport security checkpoints. Users can present the digital ID by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near a compatible identity reader. (Virginia DMV)
Privacy is a major part of the system. Before any information is shared, the device shows the user exactly what information is being requested. The user must then authorize the transaction using Face ID or Touch ID. Because the information is transferred digitally, users do not have to hand their phone or watch to another person. Setting up the digital credential is relatively straightforward. Virginia residents can open Apple Wallet, tap the plus (+) button, select “Driver’s License or State ID,” choose Virginia and follow the instructions to verify their identity and physical credential. (Virginia DMV)
Once approved, the digital ID can be used at participating locations. Virginia DMV says Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at compatible businesses and organizations and at participating TSA security checkpoints at more than 250 U.S. airports, including six airports in Virginia. (Virginia DMV)
However, the digital version does not replace the physical card. Virginia DMV says residents should continue carrying their actual driver’s license or ID, particularly because mobile credentials are not accepted everywhere. Travelers should also continue carrying an acceptable physical ID when flying. (Virginia DMV)
Residents do not need a REAL ID to add an eligible Virginia license or identification card to Apple Wallet. The feature is optional and is designed to work as a secure digital companion to the physical credential. (Virginia DMV)
Virginia already offers its separate Virginia Mobile ID app for smartphones. The addition of Apple Wallet support expands the Commonwealth’s digital identification program and gives iPhone and Apple Watch users another way to verify their identity without immediately pulling out a physical card.
