13NewsNow Shares- Virginia’s 3-day sales tax holiday kicks off this weekend, running from Friday, August 1 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday, August 3 at 11:59 p.m. The event gives shoppers a break from paying sales tax on select items, just in time for back-to-school season and hurricane prep. But before you start filling your cart, it’s important to know that not everything is eligible… and there are strict price limits you’ll need to follow to qualify.

To get the tax exemption, clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less per item, and school supplies must be $20 or less per item. The same applies to other categories like hurricane preparedness products and Energy Star or WaterSense appliances, all of which have their own specific price caps. Online shoppers can also take advantage of the deals—just make sure your items are paid for or shipped during the exemption period.

What items are eligible for the Virginia Tax-Free Weekend?

Here’s a look at the main categories of items that are eligible for tax-free savings.

  • School and office supplies like binders, art supplies, book bags, calculators, dictionaries, hand sanitizer, lunch boxes, paper, and rulers.
    • Computers and computer software are not eligible.
  • Clothing and footwear, including athletic apparel, baby clothes, bathing suits, belts, coats, costumes, diapers, dresses, gloves, hats, pants, shirts, shoes, nightwear, and socks.
    • However, if you’re planning on shopping for clothes, it’s important to know that accessories like cosmetics, hair clips, handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, and umbrellas are not eligible for the sales tax exemption. Protective equipment and sports or recreational equipment are also ineligible, so you can’t purchase things such as breathing masks, helmets, ballet shoes, roller skates, waders, etc.
  • Energy Star or WaterSense products, including air conditioners, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, washing machines, dishwashers, light bulbs, refrigerators, and faucets.
  • Hurricane preparedness equipment items like portable generators, chain saws, ice packs, batteries, radios, portable light sources, waterproof sheeting, first aid kits, and more.
